New Mexico Legal Aid Releases 2023-24 Community Impact Report
New Mexico Legal Aid is proud to announce the release of its 2023-24 Community Impact Report, showcasing a year of dedication to providing free legal assistance and advocating for justice across the state. This report highlights the remarkable work of NMLA’s team, clients’ inspiring stories, and the broad range of legal services provided to ensure equal access to justice for all.
Empowering New Mexicans Through Legal Support
This year, NMLA continued its mission of delivering crucial legal services to underserved populations, including low-income residents, seniors, and victims of violence. In 2023, NMLA handled thousands of cases spanning family law, housing law, consumer protection, and disaster relief.
NMLA’s efforts resulted in over $3.5 million in benefits, damages, and attorney’s fees recovered for clients. Additionally, several programs experienced significant growth, expanding the organization’s ability to reach even more communities.
Key Highlights from the 2023-24 Report:
- Disaster Relief Program: The NMLA Disaster Relief Helpline became a lifeline for New Mexicans affected by natural disasters, offering free legal services for recovery-related issues.
- SafeToBeYou Program: NMLA’s dedicated program for LGBTQIA+ survivors of interpersonal violence provided vital legal support to individuals navigating both discrimination and violence.
- Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Efforts: Under the leadership of Dr. Amanda Parker, NMLA has taken significant steps to strengthen its DEI initiatives. Through firm-wide training and outreach programs, NMLA ensures that staff and volunteers are equipped to serve the diverse communities of New Mexico with sensitivity and understanding.
- 2023 Impact Statistics: In 2023, NMLA handled over 7,000 cases, benefiting more than 15,000 individuals. NMLA’s housing law practice alone supported clients in over 1,500 eviction and foreclosure cases, helping families stay in their homes and avoid homelessness.
Client Impact Stories
NMLA’s work is best understood through the stories of its clients. The report shares moving accounts, such as that of a disabled Iraq War veteran who was able to save his home from repossession with the help of NMLA’s attorneys, and a Navajo family who successfully navigated a complex guardianship case with assistance from NMLA’s Native American Program.
