New Mexico Legal Aid's Commitment to Sexual Assault Awareness Month

As we kick off Sexual Assault Awareness Month, New Mexico Legal Aid reaffirms its unwavering dedication to supporting survivors of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and stalking. While our resources currently focus on providing legal assistance to victims of domestic abuse, we recognize the critical need for comprehensive support for all survivors of intimate partner violence. In collaboration with various organizations and helplines, we strive to ensure that survivors have access to vital legal information, resources, and referrals to navigate the complex legal system and seek justice.

Community Support and Resources

Understanding the multifaceted challenges survivors face, we actively promote avenues for seeking legal assistance and support beyond our organization’s scope. The New Mexico State Bar conducts a Monthly Video Workshop on Divorce, offering valuable insights and guidance to individuals navigating family law issues. Attendees can access free resources and engage in open question-and-answer sessions to address their concerns.

Additionally, survivors can explore alternative avenues for legal advice through online platforms such as the American Bar Association’s Free Legal Answers website. This initiative connects survivors with volunteer attorneys who offer guidance on various legal matters, providing a valuable resource for those seeking clarity on their rights and options.

Helplines for Support and Assistance

Recognizing the urgent need for immediate support, the Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking Helpline stands as a lifeline for survivors in distress. Available Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., this toll-free service offers confidential assistance, language translation services, and comprehensive legal information on orders of protection, divorce, child custody, housing, and more.

Empowering Survivors to Seek Help

To those who may be experiencing abuse or violence, we urge you to recognize the signs and reach out for support. If you answered yes to any of the questions provided, you may be in an abusive relationship. Your safety and well-being are paramount. If you are in immediate danger, please call 911 or your local police.

Once safe, we encourage survivors to contact our statewide helpline at 1-877-974-3400 for confidential assistance and referrals to local service providers. Remember, you are not alone, and help is available.

As we embark on Sexual Assault Awareness Month, let us stand united in our commitment to supporting survivors, raising awareness, and fostering a community where all individuals can live free from violence and fear.

Together, we can make a difference.
