Free Legal Help Through the Volunteer Attorney Program
New Mexico Legal Aid’s Volunteer Attorney Program connects eligible individuals with free legal assistance for specific civil legal matters. Through VAP's special projects, volunteer attorneys provide guidance, support, and limited scope representation — all at no cost to qualifying clients. These special projects are designed to address specific legal needs that may otherwise be difficult to navigate alone.
Applications for specific service projects are reviewed on a rolling basis and are subject to the availability of volunteer attorneys.
To qualify for services, applicants must meet New Mexico Legal Aid’s Volunteer Attorney Program’s financial eligibility guidelines, including household income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level and applicable asset limits.
Annual Reports for Guardians & Conservators

- Understanding reporting timelines
- Completing forms and documentation
- Avoiding common mistakes
Criminal Record Expungement

Through this project, volunteer attorneys may be available to provide free assistance with:
- Reviewing your criminal history
- Completing expungement forms and documentation
- Guidance throughout the expungement process
- Court representation, if needed
