Who We Help at New Mexico Legal Aid

At New Mexico Legal Aid, we believe that justice should be within reach for everyone. With decades of experience, our team of dedicated attorneys, paralegals, and staff is driven by a shared passion for making a meaningful impact in the lives of our fellow New Mexicans. We provide free legal assistance to those who need it most, ensuring that financial challenges don’t stand in the way of justice.

Supporting Those in Need

Our services are designed to assist low-income individuals and families facing civil legal issues. If you’re struggling with housing, family law matters, consumer rights, employment disputes, or veterans’ rights, we’re here to help.

Eligibility Criteria

To receive help from New Mexico Legal Aid, you must meet the following criteria:

Income Requirements
Your household income must fall within the designated low-income range. We assist individuals in households with annual incomes at or below 125% of the federal poverty guidelines.

  • No Income Requirement for Certain Cases: Income eligibility is not required for cases involving interpersonal violence or other areas where housing, medical access, or rights have been disrupted for vulnerable populations.

Civil Legal Issues
We help with a wide range of civil legal cases, including:

  • Family Law – Custody, divorce, child support, and protection from domestic violence.
  • Housing Law – Evictions, landlord-tenant disputes, and foreclosure prevention.
  • Consumer Rights – Debt collection, credit reporting errors, and payday loan disputes.
  • Employment Issues – Wage claims and unemployment benefits disputes.
  • Veterans’ Rights – Legal issues affecting veterans, including benefits and housing.

Criminal Cases
New Mexico Legal Aid can only assist with criminal cases in some tribal court jurisdictions. We do not handle criminal defense in state or federal courts.

How We Determine Eligibility

Each case is carefully evaluated by our experienced attorneys. We consider the merits of the case, our available resources, and the potential for a favorable outcome through NMLA’s intervention. Our goal is to ensure that we maximize our impact and help those who need it the most.
